Scientists Have Discovered A Deep Blue Hole At The Bottom Of The Ocean
DEEP BLUE HOLE – A rare type of sinkhole found at the bottom of the ocean off the coast of Florida is set to be explored next month.
Scientists named the hole “Green Banana” and expect to see otherworldly chasms within the seafloor. Last year, scientists also conducted an expedition to another blue hole named Amberjack.
In the Philippines, local authorities have also noted a sinkhole developing near the shores of Masbate. This was amid the recent earthquakes in the country.
According to an article from Vice, Emily Hall, a staff scientist and program manager at Mote Marine Laboratory said:
This will be the first time that we get to characterize Green Banana, so we are very eager to see how that hole might compare (chemically and biologically) to Amberjack
She added that the Green Banana would be deeper than Amberjack and even had a different shape. As such, Hall expressed her excitement about the potential things they could find.
Blue holes are spread-out across the world and can extend up to 1,000 feet deep. This would be the around the same depth of the Dragon Hole in the South China Sea. As such, diving into these mysterious portal-like holes is extremely dangerous.
Still, despite its dangers for humans, these holes have been recorded to be brimming with biodiverse habitats. Many of these holes contain corals, mollusks, sea turtles, and even sharks. Moreover, it provides the adjacent ecosystems with nourishment. Because of this, the holes were dubbed as being “oases” of the sea, drawing in not only fish but also researchers.
As per the article, Hall said that they believed the holes could be as old as 8000+years. “Each hole that we have studied so far have had differences, chemical and biological“, she added.
