Will Typhoon Wash Out Dolomite Used As White Sand?
MANILA BAY DOLOMITE – As typhoon season approaches, the public is asking “will the typhoon wash out the dolomite”?
According to initial statements from the DENR, several engineering studies were conducted to ensure the dolomite stays on the bay. However, with the recent heavy rains, parts of the artificial white sand have already faded.
But, Environment Undersecretary Benny Antiporda emphasized that the dolomite didn’t wash out, instead, it was covered by black sand. Still, the fact remains that some parts of the “beautified” beach have been reclaimed by the original elements of the bay.
Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute stated that if the dolomite were to be washed away, it would be a “lesson learned”. During an interview with ABS-CBN, Dr. Laura David stated:
I think if that happens, then it will just be a lesson learned. We move forward, we no longer try to upkeep it if it gets washed out by a super typhoon because we do know that super typhoons happen
The scientist added that if the dolomite survives the upcoming super typhoon, then maybe they would be able to sustain it. However, if it doesn’t, David said they should learn from that lesson and scrap the project instead.
Furthermore, David reiterated that when it comes to rehabilitating Manila Bay, cleaning the water should be prioritized. Additionally, she noted that if the country had a lot of money, they could do everything at once.
But, as it stands, the country merely has a budget for a few projects, especially amid the pandemic. As such, she called for prioritizing water sanitation instead.
