103-Year-Old Woman Survives COVID-19 Even With Chronic Disease
103-YEAR-OLD WOMAN SURVIVES COVID-19 – Despite having a chronic pulmonary disease, a 103-year-old Mexican woman survived the deadly coronavirus.
Ever since the pandemic began to spread, one of the most recurring themes researchers saw was the virus being deadly to the elderly. Furthermore, those who have a pre-existing condition were also at greater risk when infected with COVID-19. Some of the conditions that could contribute to greater COVID-19 risks are diabetes, heart conditions, and especially lung conditions.
However, according to the Mexican Social Security Institute, a woman identified only as Dona Maria survived these odds. Maria tested positive for the new respiratory disease and was hospitalized for 11 days. But, despite having a pulmonary disease, she didn’t have other risk factors such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
Along with this, hospital director David Sanchez revealed that Maria was always cheerful, lucid, and conversed with doctors. “Even at the end, she urged us to take care of ourselves. Her progression was very good; her symptoms have disappeared“, he said.
Following her 11-day stay in the hospital, she was returned home as her symptoms began to disappear. Pictures were posted by the IMSS showing Maria applauding the doctors as she was rolled out of a wheelchair.
Currently, Mexico has documented over 757,953 cases of COVID-19. Of that number, more than 78,800 have succumbed to the deadly disease. Globally, there have been 35,388,157 coronavirus infections. Meanwhile, the death toll for the virus has reached over 1 million.
