Vice President Robredo Speaks on Proposal To Delay Next National Elections
VICE PRESIDENT ROBREDO – Philippine Vice Pres. Leni Robredo revealed her side on the proposal to postpone the 2022 Elections.
The Philippines is currently dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 200 countries and territories across the globe have recorded cases of the disease that was first recorded in China.
Even the World Health Organization (WHO) was alarmed by how quick the COVID-19 has spread across the globe. According to WHO, this pandemic is going to be a long-term battle.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines, community quarantine measures are up in the country as part of the efforts to curb the spread of the disease.
Also, the wearing of a face mask and the practice of social distancing when going outdoors are parts of the protocol now. Gatherings are also prohibited.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the son of former Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Pampanga Representative Mikee Arroyo, proposed to postpone the 2022 Elections. Several people reacted to it including Vice President Leni Robredo.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the Vice President expressed that there is no reason to postpone the next national elections. According to her, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is preparing for a scenario wherein the pandemic is still persisting.
“Walang dahilan kung bakit kailangan i-postpone… Ipinakita ng ibang bansa na tuloy yung eleksyon kahit nasa gitna ng COVID,” the Vice Pres. said.
Based on the report, COMELEC has already spoken its side on the proposal of Rep. Mikee Arroyo. It stressed that there is no need to delay the polls as it is a constitutional mandate.
The Vice President also cited that the opening of the Manila Bay and the re-opening of Boracay Island is contrary to the proposal of delaying the elections due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
