Baseco Fish Kill Possible Sabotage Says DENR Undersecretary

BASECO FISH KILL – Environment Undersecretary Benny Antiporda sees sabotage as a possible reason for the fish kill along Manila Bay.

Controversy regarding the Manila Bay “white sand” project further escalated following a fish kill. Residents reported the water turning white as piles of dead fish and garbage were left floating.

Because of this, many theorized that the possible cause for the fish kill was the dolomite that was washed away due to heavy rains in Metro Manila. However, Antipodrda sees that as an impossibility.

Instead, he cited that the cause for the fish kill could’ve been illegal fishing, using cyanide, or sabotage to discredit the government’s projects. Moreover, he emphasized that fish kill along Manila bay was a common theme in past years.

Based on an article from GMA, Antiporda stated:

Hindi po bago ang ganung pangyayari (fish kill) but still we are not discounting the possiblity na maaaring meron na namang nag-illegal fishing, gumamit ng cyanide or meron pong sumasabotahe sa atin just to discredit the government

Additionally, the Environmental Secretary also did an experiment using goldfish in an aquarium to prove that dolomite was harmless. According to a previous post, he said:

It is erroneous to connect the incident to our beach nourishment project. The Baywalk area is very far from the Baseco Compound. There is also a big divider between these two areas, which is the breakwater

  1. Some dead fish found floating on the seaside of Baseco compound don’t thrive or survive in salt water for these kind of fish are cultured and raised in fishponds only. Obviously whoever responsible for this make-believe act is trying to discredit the ongoing project of govt along the Manila Bay.
