DENR Shows Goldfish Not Dying Despite Exposure To Crushed Dolomite

DENR SHOWS GOLDFISH NOT DYING – Amid the controversy regarding the recent fish kill close to Manila Bay, DENR Undersecretary Benny Antiporda made a little experiment.

Following heavy rains in Metro Manila, the crushed dolomite used as white sand in Manila Bay was washed away. Afterward, photos surfaced of the Baseco area with white water whitening and hundreds of dead fish.

This caused backlash online as netizens say that this was the effect of the dolomite. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Fisheries said they lacked the data to confirm or deny if dolomite was in fact the cause.

Meanwhile, Antiporda conducted his own small scale experiment with goldfish and an aquarium. The purpose of the test was simple, to prove that dolomite doesn’t affect the fish.

As such, he placed crushed dolomite in the aquarium with the fish inside. Here are some photos of Antipora posted by Philippine Star on Facebook:

According to Philstar, Antipora said it was erroneous to connect the incident in Manila Bay to the fish kill in Baseco.

It is erroneous to connect the incident to our beach nourishment project. The Baywalk area is very far from the Baseco Compound. There is also a big divider between these two areas, which is the breakwater
