First Pinay Deputy Mayor In England, Cynthia Barker Has Passed Away
CYNTHIA BARKER – The first Pinay deputy mayor in England, Cynthia Barker has died, September 14, her brother confirmed.
Pinay politician Cynthia Barker was born in Laguna and studied Industrial Engineering at Adamson University. She has been a long-time resident of Hertsmere, an administrative district that’s located north in the United Kingdom.
Barker has been active in various initiatives, including among the Pinoy community. In 2017, she was included in Filipina Women’s Network’s 100 Most Influential Filipina Women of the World.
Last June 24, Cynthia Barker was installed as mayor in Hertsmere in Hertfordshire, England. She became the first Filipina official to hold the prestigious post.
On Monday, September 14, her brother Gene Alcantara confirmed and announced that Cynthia has died. On his Facebook post, he wrote, “It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of The Worshipful Hertsmere Mayor Councillor Cynthia Barker following a bout of serious illness.”
“We will be issuing further information in due course, but may we ask please to respect the family’s privacy at this very difficult time. Your prayers for the repose of her soul would however be welcome,” he added.
