Duterte to Allocate More than P100 Billion Budget for Railway Modernization
The president of the Philippines plans to disburse more than P100 billion to fund the modernization of the railway in 2021.

According to Duterte, the first subway and other railway projects are part of the government’s infrastructure development to improve the transportation and mobility of people and products.

From the ₱ 122.9 billion budget of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), ₱ 106.3 billion, or 86.5% will fund the country’s railway system modernization. About ₱ 34.6 billion will be allocated for the first phase of the Metro Manila subway project.

Based on the report of RMN, the ₱ 355 billion subway project is expected to have 15 stations that will penetrate from Quezon City, Pasig, Makati, Taguig, and Pasay. It is estimated that it can handle about 370,000 passengers per day.
The partial operation of the first three stations is expected to start in 2022 while full operations will be in 2025. Other government railway projects include the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) System, MRT-3 Rehabilitation, Philippine National Railways – South Long Haul Project, and the implementation of cashless ticket payment on all railway systems.
