Recently, subscribers of MERALCO complained of high bills from the electric company’s staggered payment system. However, according to an article from ABS-CBN, MERALCO stated:

MERALCO is currently evaluating the said Decision and its available legal remedies given that it is the position of the Company that it has fully complied with the advisories issued by the ERC during the enhanced community quarantine period

Earlier this year, at the start of the community quarantines, MERALCO suspended its meter reading. Because of this, the power distributor implemented an averaging scheme for its consumers’ bills. However, this led to many customers experiencing “bill shocks”.

Afterward, many complained about extremely high electricity rates. Following this, the ERC ordered MERALCO to re-issue the meter-based electricity bill in June. As per the article, this was done in an attempt to refund excess payments.

Additionally, a staggered payment system was put into play to assist its consumers amid the coronavirus pandemic. Moreover, MERALCO said they would give an extension of their no disconnection policy until the end of October to further help those hit by the health crisis.
