Will Riders Get Compensation For Unnecessary Motorcycle Barriers?

UNNECESSARY MOTORCYCLE BARRIERS – A lawmaker urged to government to give riders compensation for the protective barriers for motorcycles riders had to buy.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Philippine government mandated the use of protective barriers for couples who live together. However, months into the enforcement of the protocol, the government suddenly announced that it would be allowed.

Since it’s implementation, the head of the project, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año had faced heavy criticism for his decisions. However, Año doubled down on the barrier and said accidents involving barriers were due to faulty materials, not the design. Additionally, he called out critics and said that when it comes to the pandemic, they should leave it to the experts.

However, thousands of motorcycle barriers had already been bought by countless drivers. As such, Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Alfredo Garbin said the government should compensate riders for the unnecessary equipment.

According to an article from ABS-CBN, Garbin stated:

Kailangang mabawi ng motorcycle riders ang kanilang ginastos para makabili at magpa-install ng motorcycle barriers. Gumastos sila ng perang pambili sana ng pagkain at gamot

Furthermore, Garbin had some suggestions regarding how the government should give back to riders. Aside from cash, Garbin suggested that riders be given payment in kind for traffic violation fines or fees for vehicle registration and driver’s license.

Along with this, he also suggested that the government give out groceries equal to the price of the barrier when exchanged with the trade department’s Diskuwento Caravan.

However, barriers are still required for people who do not share the same home according to police. Moreover, engineers have previously said that the barriers hold little effectiveness when it comes to protecting both the rider and the driver from air particles.
