Elmo Magalona was asked about his father’s legacy
Singer-actor Elmo Magalona admitted that he can never totally leave the shadow of his father, the late Master Rapper Francis Magalona.
Francis M or Kiko rose to fame as one of the initiators of the rap genre in the Philippine music industry. Eventually, he ventured into acting and hosting. He became part of the longest-running noontime show, Eat Bulaga.
In 2009, Francis M died after suffering from cancer for several years. Some of his children ventured into showbiz as well, like Elmo.
In a recent interview, based on the article in the Pilipino Star Ngayon, Elmo Magalona admitted that people would always compare him to his father.
“I just really learned to accept na as much as we try to escape being under the shadow, ako I learned to accept na it’s part of life. You don’t really try to run away from the shadow because it’s part of you,” the singer-actor said.
However, he said that at the same time, he is not letting this be his whole personality, and he just accepts this, but also lets people know that if people request their papa’s songs, they will be there.
“We are game to bring back the memories of the songs that he created. Pero I’ve learned to know na to set that aside and have something for my own din. Para I have my own identity as well,” Elmo said.
The singer-actor also shared that his father served as his mentor when he was young, but the late Master was not that strict.
Elmo Magalona also shared that they really appreciate the music that their father had created, and proof of this was that they would listen to it during their spare time.
He also shared that Francis M was never a stage father. “Personally ako, sa akin lang, but because of the respect that I have for him talaga I really wanted to see, bakit niya kaya pinapakinggan ‘yung artist na ‘to? What made him curious to follow this era of music? I think we both have styles that are unique compared to our dad,” he shared, adding that most of his foundation and technique came from his father.
