Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines is one of the countries prone to earthquakes. The shaking may come with different magnitudes thus the effect may also vary.
In most cases, quakes are hardly felt. There are no damages to properties and as well as casualties. However, there are also times when a quake has a strong magnitude that caused the collapse of buildings and the loss of lives.
It is the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or more commonly called as PHIVOLCS that record earthquakes in the country. It also issues advisories on whether or not there is a threat of a tsunami.
This morning, August 18, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit Masbate. Its epicenter was recorded at 11.96°North, 124.03°East – 007 km South 29° East of Cataingan with a depth of 021 kilometers.
