It is a sea located in the western portion of the Pacific Ocean and east northeast of the archipelagic country the Philippines, where it got its name from.

The sea occupies an estimated surface area of about 5 million square kilometres or 2 million square miles. From the floor of the sea formed the Philippine Sea Plate.

It has a complex and diverse undersea relief, with its floor formed into a structural basin by a series of geologic faults and fracture zones.

It is bordered by the Philippines and Taiwan to the west, Japan to the north, the Marianas to the east and Palau to the south.

Nearby seas include the Celebes Sea, to the south, the South China Sea, and the East China Sea.

The sea also hosts an exotic marine ecosystem. There are about five hundred species of hard and soft corals which occur in the coastal waters and 20% of the globally-known shellfish species that live in the said sea.
