DILG Warns Of New Contact Tracing Scams In Philippines

CONTACT TRACING SCAMS – The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Central Luzon reported new contact tracing scams in the Philippines

Despite the coronavirus pandemic that has affected millions of Filipinos, there are still some people who try to take advantage. As such, a new scam was created by people acting as “contact tracers” for COVID-19.

Based on reports from the DILG, the scammers would call or text you something like this:

According to our contact tracing, you have been in close proximity to someone who has been tested positive for COVID-19. This means you now need to self isolate and take the COVID-19 test. I cannot give you any information about the person or the whereabouts of contact due to privacy laws. But you need to be tested within the next 72 hours

Afterward, they would ask you for your best mailing address so that they could send you a “testing kit”. Then, they would ask for sensitive information such as your credit card number and details for the testing kit and results worth $50.

Next, if you refuse to give them your details, they would threaten their victims of penalties for not complying with the health protocols.
