Philippine Coast Guard Decides To File Charges Against Vienna Wood

COAST GUARD TO FILE CHARGES – Following further investigations, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) decided to file a case against Vienna Wood.

Last Saturday, the Hong Kong cargo ship Vienna Wood hit a small fishing vessel, Liberty 5. The collision caused 12 fishermen and two passengers to be lost at sea off the coast of Occidental Mindoro.

Currently, the PCG is still searching for the missing individuals. Sadly, there is yet to be news of signs of life.

As such, according to an article from GMA, the PCG would file charges against them.

We are filing a case, we are gathering evidence, kasama iyong mga sworn statements ng mga manginigisda

During an interview with GMA, PCG Commandant Vice-Admiral George Ursabia Jr. said that large ships such as Vienna Wood would definitely have functioning radars. Therefore, there would be no reason that the cargo ship could’ve missed the small fishing vessel.

Moreover, after the collision, Vienna Wood didn’t make any rescue attempts on their part despite having several service or rescue boats at their disposal. Instead, they merely maneuvered out of the wreckage area following the collision.

It has been four days since the collision happened. Due to this, Ursabia regrettably stated that there is only a “slim” chance of the fishermen being found alive.

Slim na ang chance na makita natin silang buhay, kaya retrieval na ang magiging punto namin in the next two days.

After that, we will evaluate if there is a need to extend for two more days or we will terminate our efforts on this
