Health Workers Want Duque To Resign As COVID Situation Worsens
HEALTH WORKERS VS DUQUE – The Alliance of Health Workers (AHW) want Health Secretary Francisco Duque to resign from his post.
It has been 5 months since the Philippines first encountered the new coronavirus, COVID-19. Since then, the potential threat of the disease was downplayed as officials said there was nothing to worry about.
As such, the AHW called for Duques’s resignation because, for them, DOH still had no concrete plan on how to deal with the virus. Moreover, the group’s concern for the safety of health workers becomes paramount.
We have been fighting the COVID-19 pandemic for nearly 5 months now, but the DOH and Duterte administration still have no clear and comprehensive plans on how to combat the deadly virus and the health workers’ situation are getting worse.
According to an article from Inquirer, the AHW stated that they demanded Health Secretary Duque to resign. Furthermore, the wanted him accountable for his “neglect, incompetence, shortcomings, and failures” in handling the coronavirus response.
Since the beginning of the viral epidemic, the main concern health workers had was their safety. As the viral outbreak began to spread, the Philippines had one of the highest percentage of health workers infected with the virus.
As of June 22, over 3,000 medical frontliners have been infected with the coronavirus. Meanwhile, 2,235 had recovered. But unfortunately, 33 medical workers have died due to the virus.
Because of the lack of safety measures for frontliners, health workers have become demoralized. Some have even expressed the desire to quit their jobs due to fears of contracting the virus.
Health workers are demoralized; despite the hardships and sacrifices of health workers, from low wages and no job security, DOH and the government authorities were able to deceive, divide and insult them through the grant of COVID-19 Hazard Pay and Special Risk AllowanceAHW
