Robredo Shares Thoughts On NAIA Rename, Snaps At Lawmakers For “Ill-Timed” Move

ROBREDO ON NAIA PROPOSAL – Vice President Leni Robredo shares her thoughts on the recent NAIA rename proposals.

Clearly, the Philippines still has a lot of ground to cover in terms of its COVID-19 response. In fact, the Philippines had one of the most inefficient COVID-19 responses in all of Asia.

But, despite all the looming problems the Philippines needs to face, lawmakers decided to focus on renaming an airport. Recently, President Rodrigo Duterte’s son and Davao City 1st District Representative Paolo Duterte filled a bill to rename NAIA into (Paliparang Pandaigig ng Pilipinas).

However, Vice President Leni Robredo emphasized that we shouldn’t shift our focus away from COVID-19. During an interview with CNN, she stated:

“Nasa gitna tayo ng pandemya, ito pa talaga maiisip natin… Number one, it’s ill-timed”

Number two, alam naman natin why it was named Ninoy Aquino International Airport. So ‘yung tanong: Where is our sense of history?

To those unaware, NAIA was named after Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino who was assassinated on what was once known as the Manila International Airport.

Aquino was a well-known critic of President Ferdinand Marcos who reined the Philippines for 21 years under the Martial Law. Following his death, the airport was renamed into NAIA during Corazon Aquino’s term.
