President Rodrigo Duterte Joins 36th ASEAN Summit Online
DUTERTE JOINS ASEAN SUMMIT – President Rodrigo Duterte, along with other world leaders, participated in the 36th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit online.
Duterte was also expected to highlight concerns regarding the much-disputed South China Sea and the welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) during the summit.

Yesterday, Presidential assistant on foreign affairs Robert Borje said:
Lahat ng mga important positions of national interest to the Philippines ay kanyang ina-advance, kasama na dito ang nangyayari sa South China Sea and migrant workers affairs
Moreover, he emphasized that Duterte would remain active in talks between his counterparts to progress the Philippine national interest in ASEAN.
Meanwhile, the 36th ASEAN Summit would be the first regular online conference which followed a special virtual conference last April. There they talked about their COVID-19 response initiatives.
This year, the conference would be led by Vietnam. Furthermore, the summit expects to adopt 10 outcome documents on the following key areas:
- Food security and supply chain connectivity in terms of pandemic response
- Countering radicalization
- Violent extremism.
According to a report from ABS-CBN, the Malacañang stated:
Their discussions will build on the agreements adopted during the Special ASEAN Summit on COVID-19 held last April, seeking ways to facilitate the ASEAN region’s transition to the ‘new normal’ and post-pandemic recovery,
During the last summit Duterte attended, he voiced out that all countries should be given fair and easy access to potential vaccines or cures that are being developed.
