Stranded OFWs Forced To Sell Blood After Being Suspended Due To COVID-19

STRANDED OFWs SELL BLOOD – Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Saudi Arabia were forced to sell their blood so they could buy food.

Due to the effects of the new coronavirus, COVID-19, thousands of OFWs have lost their jobs. As such, some resort to selling blood as many have lost their jobs and remain stranded for 3 months.

Some of these OFWs were reported to sell their blood for 500 riyal or P6671. According to an article from GMA, one of the OFWs said:

Walang-wala na po kaming pera panggastos. Kaming lahat wala na po dito. ‘Yung iba po naming kasamahan nagawa nang mag-donate ng dugo para lang may pambiling pagkain

Furthermore, the OFWs complained that almost all of them still had paychecks that were still unpaid by their companies. Due to rising stress, many want to go back home to the Philippines.

Ang gusto lang po namin sana ay makauwi na lang po kaming lahat. Sana matulungan po kami ng POLO, ng OWWA, kasi ‘yung iba po sa amin talaga nai-i-stress na rin. Lahat po kami nahihirapan na

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs – Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs, there was an estimated 158,633 stranded OFWs around the world.

Meanwhile, the bulk of these numbers would come from the Middle East with close to 158,633. There was a reported 88,000 OFWs stranded inSaudi while around 50,000 were in the United Arab Emirates.
