Kanlaon Volcano Generates 136 Earthquakes, Phivolcs Says

KANLAON VOLCANO – The state volcanology agency Phivolcs reported that the Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Occidental generates 136 volcanic earthquakes.

On Monday early morning (June 22, 2020 – 2 am), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded a 4.6 magnitude quake in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental. The tremor has been felt in the nearby areas.

The quake’s epicenter has been located at 10.40°North, 123.04°East – 012 km South 79° East of La Carlota City. The tremor is tectonic in origin and had a depth of 015 kilometers, according to Phivolcs.

The volcanology agency said that 136 volcanic-tectonic earthquakes have been recorded from 4:03 pm on Sunday afternoon until 2:00 am on Monday morning. Different intensities have been felt in various areas but magnitude 4.7 was the strongest earthquake registered in La Carlota.

 “As of 01:50 AM, a total of 81 events have been recorded,” Phivolcs said.

Phivolcs said that they are closely monitoring the volcano’s condition after the series of earthquakes and ensured the public to inform them if any developments are available.
