Lapu-Lapu City government held this event to pay tribute to frontliners
The event that was intended to pay tribute to frontliners in Lapu-Lapu City received criticisms from netizens and a columnist who said that it was an “empty PR stunt”.
Columnist and blogger Tonyo Cruz has this comment regarding the supposed show of appreciation that local government of Lapu-Lapu initiated for frontline workers amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The said event was held during the 59th charter anniversary celebration of the city last Wednesday. On that day, the local government highlighted the efforts and sacrifices of frontliners.
A short awarding ceremony was held and the red-colored water was sprayed on the ground of Lapu-Lapu City Hall which is supposed to honor the bravery of the frontliners as red is being associated with courage, based on the article from Interaksyon.

However, this was criticized by some Twitter users who said that the city could have pay a tribute to frontliners in more meaningful was such as increasing their salary and benefits, as well as providing their necessities as they are doing their duties.
Tonyo Cruz commented on this also as he said, “No to empty PR (public relations) stunts.”
Based on the article, a netizen enumerated the “actual ways” that the government can do to pay tribute to health workers.
Meanwhile, Lapu-Lapu City was one of the cities that earlier proposed an ordinance that will cater on the protection of fronliners. The city is also providing hazard pay worth P500 per day and those who work five days a week for a month can get P12,000.
Amid the pandemic, frontliners, especially health workers, have been working round-the-clock. Aside from the time and strength that they are using in order to fulfill their jobs, they are also risking their own lives and the opportunity to spend more time with their loved ones.
