The Rappler CEO, together with ex-reporter Reynaldo Santos Jr, faced cyber libel complaint filed by businessman Wilfredo Keng.

It was because of an article against the businessman that the online news site published in 2012 and was republished in 2014 with the title “CJ using SUVs of controversial businessman”.

Allegedly, former DOJ Chief Renato Corona was using the vehicle of the businessman during the impeachment trial. Keng denied this allegation against him and stated that the social media news site did not try to get his side regarding the issue and so he filed a case in 2017.

On February 14, 2019, Ressa was arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for the alleged libelous article against Keng. In his statement after the Rappler CEO was arrested, the businessman said that it will test the Philippine legal system in giving fair judgment to the complaint of a private individual.

Keng also said that if Ressa, Santos, as well as Rappler will not be held accountable, “example of impunity will emulated and replicated”. According to him, this will not just destroy individuals but the whole county.

After more than a year, the verdict is finally out. Based on the report from CNN Philippine, the court hands down guilty verdict against Maria Ressa.

Aside from this case, she is also facing other cases such tax evasion.
