Manila RTC Judge Rainelda Estacio-Montesa Is Judge of Rappler’s Maria Ressa Cyber Libel Case
JUDGE OF RAPPLER’S MARIA RESSA – Manila Regional Trial Court Judge Rainelda Estacio-Montesa found Maria Ressa guilty of cyber libel.
This morning, Rappler’s Chief Executive Office Maria Ressa came to Manila RTC Branch 46 for the promulgation of the cyber libel case against her. It is over the “CJ using SUVs of controversial businessman” article published in 2012.
Aside from the Rappler CEO and the news media company itself, its former researcher, Reynaldo Santos Jr., is also facing cyber libel charges. It is over allegations that former Justice Chief Renato Corona was using the vehicle of a businessman during his impeachment trial.

Manila RTC Judge Rainelda Estacio-Montesa found Rappler’s Maria and Reynaldo Santos Jr. guilt of cyber libel. She is the presiding judge of the Manila RTC Branch 46.
It was an eight-month trial for the cyber libel case. Based on a report on Manila Bulletin, during the trial held early today, June 15, only the complainant, the accused, the complainant and the accused’s lawyers, and three (3) members of the press were allowed to enter the court.
Following the guilty verdict to Ressa and Santos, the Rappler CEO encouraged the journalists and the public not to be afraid. According to her, the people lose their rights when they are not using it.
Rappler was found not guilty of the charges. As for Ressa and Santos, they are sentenced to imprisonment from six (6) months up to six (6) years. They are allowed to post bail and the moral damages and exemplary damages charges are at Php 200,000.00 each.
