Maria A. Ressa is a Filipino-American journalist and popularly known as co-founder of the news site Rappler. The Rappler co-founder was born on October 2, 1963, in Manila.

The media personality grew up in Manila until the age of 10 and relocated to Tom River, New Jersey, wherein she spent her childhood and adolescence. She studied at Toms River High School North and graduated with a B.A. degree in English at Princeton University.

CAREER

The 56-year-old journalist had her first job at government station PTV 4. Eventually, she co-founded an independent production company named Probe in 1987 and also worked as the bureau chief of CNN until 1995.

She continues to works in various companies and established Rappler in 2012, which started as Facebook page MovePH in 2011.

CONTROVERSY

On January 10, 2018, Ressa and Rappler reporter Reynaldo Santos, and businessman Benjamin Bitanga received a subpoena filed by Wilfredo Keng for allegedly republishing an article on Keng’s alleged lending of sports vehicle to late Chief Justice Renato Corona as bribe.

In November 2018, the Fil-Am personality faced tax evasion and failure to file tax returns charges from the Philippine government.

On February 13, 2019, the journalist faced cyber libel charges for an article published on the online news site Rappler.
