Duterte Had Late Night Talks With Xi Jinping Promoting China-Philippine Cooperation
DUTERTE, XI JINPING – The Presidents of the Philippines and China had late night talks hours before independence day.
However, the embassy did not disclose any further details regarding what they talked about. In a Twitter post, Chinese Embassy Manila said:
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte held a telephone conversation on Thursday evening.
But, China’s Xinhua News revealed that Duterte’s call with Xi was regarding efforts to promote cooperation between Manila and Beijing.

According to a report from ABS-CBN, the conversation between the two Presidents came days after China and the Philippines marked 45 years of diplomatic ties.
Along with this, Duterte also penned a letter to Xi on June 9. The letters affirmed Manila’s committed efforts to further intensify relationships with Beijing.
As the entire world continues to face challenges to security and stability and the rule of law and with the rise of non-traditional and emerging threats such as the COVID-19 pandemic, further strengthening Philippines-China partnership takes on even greater significance
The ties with China strengthen as the Philippines began systematically distanced itself from its ally, the United States. Following this, Xi was quoted by a Chinese state-run agency, saying:
“I attach great importance to the development of China-Philippines ties,”
