DOH New COVID-19 Report Ignites Confusion Even With Breakdown

DOH New COVID-19 Report Confuses Many Due To “Backlogs”

DOH NEW COVID-19 REPORT – Confusion sparked as the Department of Health (DOH) released their latest(?) COVID-19 report yesterday.

The DOH reported 1,046 coronavirus cases yesterday. However, it was their new metric for reporting cases that had people confused. It said that 46 were “fresh cases” (those tested within the last 3 days), while 1,000 were “late cases” (tested results released more than 4 days).

Moreover, the number of deaths were reported to be 21. But, the question now is “When did these people die?”.

The DOH explained that the increased number of cases was due to their “backlog” of COVID-19 cases. But, here’s where the data gets even more confusing.

Of the 539 recorded cases on Thursday, 466 had tagged residential information. Meanwhile, 384 cases were documented in Luzon, 59 from Visayas, and 23 in Mindanao. Additionally, 330 were from NCR, 55 from Region VII, and 99 cases were from other regions with 55 cases from returning OFWs.

However, according to an article from ANC, NCR did not have 330 cases but 336. Of that number, 177 were up for validation for the second time. The fact that there were still 177 cases leaves a large gap uncertainty with the actual numbers.

Also, with more confirmed cases, the virus’ fatality rate naturally lowered (5.66% vs 6.12% global average). However, this also affected the recovery rate which now lowered at 22.4% (43.8% world average, 49% ASEAN average).

With the backlog data used, the number of recoveries should also see an increase. Instead, the Philippines still had one of the lowest recovery/death ration among ASEAN countries.

Moreover, despite the number of cases, the government still claims the outbreak is under control. As such, people saw DOH’s new system as sugar coating and cherry picking data as much as possible to look good and ind impressive.
