15 Drivers Lives Inside Jeepney Amid ECQ After Being Evicted Due to Unpaid Rent
QUEZON CITY – 15 jeepney drivers were forced to lives inside their jeepney after being evicted from the rented houses because they were unable to pay the rent.
The 15 drivers were living in their jeepneys rotonda in Barangay Paligsahan, Quezon City after they were forced to leave their rented house after unable to pay rent since Metro Manila was locked down because of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines president Zeny Maranan called on the authorities to provide drivers financial assistance and help them clarify the process.
“Sabihin na nila sa amin nang tapat na hindi na talaga kami makakatanggap para nang sa ganoon, huwag nang umasa itong mga taong ito,” Maranan said in an interview with DZMM.
Among the drivers was George Rivera, who wanted to return to Dumaguete City where his 2 children and his wife lived. That’s where he said he was looking for a job as he still had to get his kids to college.
His colleague Boy Letigio appealed to the government to help them return to the province. He applied to the government’s “Back-Province” program to include him and his wife.
As of now, despite the community quarantine has been mitigated to general community quarantine (GCQ), where 50 percent of the industry is allowed to resume their operation, jeepneys are still now allowed to operate. Drivers and operators are calling out the local government to help them with their needs amid the pandemic.
