FDA Statement On ‘Carrimycin’ Used By China To Fight Against COVID-19

FDA stated this about the drug called ‘Carrimycin’

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released this statement regarding ‘Carrimycin’, a drug being used by China in fighting against COVID-19.

Amid the health crisis, the national government of several countries have been seeking a vaccine or cure to the fatal virus. President Rodrigo Duterte even expressed his willingness to give P50 million reward to the person who will develop the vaccine.

Several names of drugs also surfaced as being utilized by coronavirus patients. One of those drugs is called carrimycin.

The Trial Site News website stated that National Medical Products Administration approved the said drug on June 24, 2019, that was primarily developed to treat upper respiratory infections. On February 23, 2020, Beijing Youan Hospital launched a study to investigate the efficacy and safety of carrimycin as a drug for COVID-19. Researchers dig deeper to the available information about the drug until the pandemic took place this was touted as one of the possible treatments against the virus.

However, based on the article, no results have been shared with the world as of press time.

On the other hand, FDA chief Eric Domingo said that the drug carrimycin, which was developed in China is not part of the solidarity trial of drugs against COVID-19.

“‘Yung Carrimycin po is an investigational drug na ginagamit po ngayon sa China—clinical trials pa rin to see if it’s useful for COVID,” he said during a recent interview on GMA’s morning show Unang Hirit.

He added the said drug from China is not part of the solidarity trial and it is not registered in the Philippines. Additionally, there is no permit being asked to import this.

The World Health Organization (WHO) led the solidarity trial, which the Philippines is part of it, aims to study the safety and effectiveness of four drugs (antiviral Remdesivir, antimalarial drug Hydroxychloroquine, antiretroviral) as potential treatments for the new coronavirus.
