Private Schools, Universities given right to decide on tuition refund – CHED

CHED gave discretion to private schools and universities on this matter

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has given the right to private schools and universities to decide regarding the tuition refund amid the enhanced community quarantine.

Because of the ECQ, businesses had to refund some of their services as people are advised to stay at home as much as possible. Various establishments also decided to temporarily close because of the health crisis in the Philippines due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

When it comes to the education department, the DepEd already released a statement that graduation ceremonies will not be happening this year. The opening of the school year is also uncertain as of now due to the ECQ. It will still depend on the situation of the health crisis when the month of May comes.

For colleges and universities, CHED said private institutions are given their own discretion when it comes to giving refunds of the students’ tuition fees, based on the report from UNTV.

Reportedly, the Ateneo de Manila University came up with a decision to end their current term on May 8. With this, all students were given passing grades, regardless of their class standing. Furthermore, the students will receive P20,000 refund and 60 percent of the laboratory fee.

Meanwhile, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez said that the trade sector in the Philippines is greatly affected by the enhanced community quarantine. They had to postpone trade expos that would aim to offer local products.

Hindi naman siya totally cancelled or refunded; nirere-schedule nalang pagka wala nang issue and COVID, [They’re not totally cancelled or refunded. We are rescheduling them for a later date when the issue on COVID-19 is over],” the trade secretary said.

However, they are still hopeful that expos will still push through in the future, based on the report.
