PNP: More Than 20,000 Curfew Violators Arrested Nationwide

CURFEW VIOLATORS – The Philippine National Police said that more than 20,000 violators have been arrested nationwide as the country is under quarantine due to COVID-19.

According to ABS-CBN News, there are 20,389 people who were nabbed for violating lockdown curfews. They were among the 75,750 people who violated nationwide since March 17 up to April Fools’.

The Joint Task Force Corona Virus Shield (JTF-COVIDS) said that most of them, 51,474 people, to be exact, were warned and, 3,887 were fined.

The joint task force also placed guidelines on arresting violators, among them includes not punishing them physically and detainment of up to 12 hours while being admonished as to deter them from violating them again if charging them will be deffered after the lockdown.

President Duterte also tasked the JTF to help distribute financial aid to poor people who are affected by the lockdown.

Police Lt. Gen Guillermo Eleazar, head of the JTf said that they aim to ensure security of local social workers who were assigned to distribute the said aid, as well as ensuring the strict implementation of social distancing and home quarantine.

“We appeal to the public to remain in their houses and observe patience while waiting for the distribution of the cash assistance to help them cope with the adverse effects brought by this pandemic.”

As per the report, he further warned those who spread fake news and provoking people to observe protocol. This was after an incident in Quezon City which was a protest, resulting in the arrest of several residents who just wanted food. They were eventually released upon the city government’s request.

After this, President Duterte warned the public that they will be shot to death by troops if they will cause trouble.
