TWITTER – Twitter recently announced that it will aid Filipinos in battling against fake news and misinformation amid COVID-19.

According to ABS-CBN News, to do so, the social media giant released a page solely for news and information on reliable sites and experts about COVID-19 and stretch its protocol to hide tweets with the potential to spread false information.

Filipino Twitter users will see an event page which contains real-time legitimate and official information about the disease whenever they tap on their home timelines on Mobile, as well as in the Explore section when they open their accounts on a desktop or laptop.

Furthermore, it will also delete posts that violates the said official guidance information which, as they described, spikes up the risk that someone contracts of transmits the virus.

Also known as “Zero-Tolerance Approach to Platform Manipulation”, this feature will include posts under the following guidelines:

  • Denial of expert guidance
  • Urging the public to use treatments, prevention, and diagnostic techniques that are deemed false and ineffective; and
  • Misinformation claiming that it came from experts or authorities.

As per the report, the platform said that they collaborated with the local Department of Health and the Philippine branch of World Health Organization (WHO) in imposing the said changes.

Twitter added that the public can see an uptick of verified accounts as they aim to identify legitimate public health authorities worldwide and experts to help battle against fake news.
