Amid Coronavirus Lockdown, PNP Asks Tanods To Assist Fight Against Virus
STAY INDOORS – The Philippine National Police (PNP) asks Barangay Tanods for to assist in keeping residents indoors amid the coronavirus lockdown.
Due to increasing numbers in Coronavirus cases, President Rodrigo Duterte imposed an enhanced community quarantine in Luzon. As such, travel was restricted and curfews were imposed,
However, there are still some residents who risk going out. With this, the PNP requested assistance on the local levels.
According to an article from ABS-CBN, the PNP has asked barangay watchmen to assist in keeping residents indoors.
This meant that village watchmen could enforce measures to have residents comply with quarantine measures. As per the article, PNP deputy chief for operation, Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar stated:
Ang tama pong gawin ng ating mga barangay, mga barangay tanod ay tumulong po kayo para sa inyong lugar na nasasakupan na mapaalalahanan itong mga kababayan natin na mag-stay sa loob ng bahay
(The right action is to have in our barangay is to have our tanods help in giving reminders to residents to stay within their homes.)
Eleazar emphasized that the PNP could not cover every corner of the community as such, help is required. Due to the lockdown, the military, along with the police have been sent to man borders.
Currently, the new coronavirus has affected millions of people worldwide. Moreover, there have been 378,394 people infected with COVID-19. Furthermore, 16,491 have succumbed to the deadly disease.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health had reported 39 new coronavirus cases in the Philippines. With this, the total number of cases in the country rose to 501.
Additionally, President Duterte was given emergency powers to address the current coronavirus situation the country is facing.
