DOTr Eyes Total Ban of Public Transport in Metro Manila

Total Ban of Public Transport in Metro Manila, Planned by DOTr

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is now planning the total ban on public transportation in Metro Manila.

Transportation Spokesperson Goddes Libiran said that the transportation department together with the members of the inter-agency task force will discuss the possibility of public transportation ban in the National Capital Region due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The transportation department considers the plan while Metro Manila is under the community quarantine. The proposal has been made to encourage the Filipino people to stay at home during the month-long quarantine.

“Sabi nga ni Secretary Tugade, DOTr, at this time, is not in this to arrange or assure mobility. We are here to encourage people to stay at home. This is temporary and they should understand this. Buhay ang nakatayo dito!” Libiran said.

However, the measure is still subject to the approval of the IATF on Emerging Infectious Diseases headed by the Department of Health, according to Libiran.

The National Capital Region has been placed under community quarantine prohibiting the travel to and from Metro Manila from March 15 to April 14, 2020, amid COVID-19. Authorities might only allow essential travel.
