Kanlaon Volcano Raised to Alert Level 1 by PAGASA After Generating 80 Volcanic Earthquakes Since March 9
The state volcanology agency Phivolcs raised Kanlaon Volcano alert level 1 after generating around eighty (80) volcanic earthquakes.
On Wednesday (March 11, 2020), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology released the latest updates about Kanlaon Volcano. The report has been posted on their 10:00 am bulletin.
Phivolcs raise Kanlaon from Alert Level 0 to Alert Level 1 (Abnormal) after generating eighty (80) volcanic earthquakes since 9 March 2020. Seventy-seven (77) of them are low-frequency events associated with magmatic fluids.
Kanlaon Volcano shows increased numbers of irregularities including volcanic quakes, and steam-driven or phreatic eruptions at the summit crater. It indicates an abnormal condition as it continues to show signs of unrest.
The local government units in the area prohibit the entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone due to possible eruptions.
The seismology agency also advised the civil aviation authorities to stay away from the volcano’s summit for possible sudden phreatic eruptions. The ejecta from the volcanic eruption could be hazardous to aircraft flying near the volcano’s crater.
