In a memorandum order released, Treñas said that single-use plastics pollute waterways, kill marine life and causes the increase of the nation’s solid waste..

According to Panay News, Treñas added that this is part of the government’s “solid waste avoidance and minimization strategy.”

The memo was addressed to all city government departments and offices, as well as employees in the city hall.

This, like the Supreme Court, came after the issuance of the Resolution No. 1363-2020 from the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC), which ordered the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to make and enact specific guidelines that would restrict single-use plastics in all offices of govewrnment.

As mentioned previously, single-use plastics include:

  • plastic cups lower than 0.2 mm in thickness
  • plastic drinking straws
  • plastic coffee stirrers
  • plastic spoons, forks, and knives
  • plastic labo
  • thin-filmed sando bags lower than 15 microns

As per the report, the mayor noted the considerable volume of trash usually collected from the Iloilo Esplanade and public plazas.

“Kadamo gid sang basura dira pirmi nga ginatipon,”

The ones who will enforce the ban will be the The City Environment and Natural Resources Office.
