Panic and fears followed as residents in Hong Kong rush to grab medical supplies such as face masks. The chaos even led some to commit crimes just for toilet paper.

Meanwhile, Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) working in Hong Kong fear they might lose their jobs due to the outbreak.

According to an article from ABS-CBN, at least 35 OFWs had already lost their jobs in Hong Kong. Almost half of the OFWs’ contracts got terminated as their employers fled Hong Kong in fear of the virus.

Of the 35 workers, 16 had their employers flee Hong Kong. Meanwhile, 12 domestic workers lost their jobs following disputes with their employers who barred them from leaving the house during rest days do avoid catching the virus.

Luckily, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac stated Filipinos could still find a new employer.

As per the article, Cacdac stated:

Malungkot na nangyari pero kung titingnan natin ang kabuuang bilang, hindi naman significant dahil 220,000 ang bilang ng mga Pilipino sa Hong Kong

In addition, authorities are working on repatriating 48 other Filipinos in Macao and about 15-20 Filipinos in mainland China who want to come back home.

Over 90,000 people have been infected with COVID-19 worldwide. Along with this, more than 3,100 have been killed, mostly in mainland China.

Because of this, the Philippines had banned travel to China, Hong Kong, and Macau and a part of South Korea.
