According to UniverseToday, also known as southern light and southern polar lights, these are bright lights which are usually red, green or blur, which can be seen on the southern hemisphere, hence, the southern counterpart of the northern hemisphere’s Aurora Borealis.

Like its northern kin, it is strongest in an oval that is centered on the south magnetic pole and like such, it is the  interaction of protons and electrons from the sun along with the ionosphere of the Earth.

The best place to witness this phenomenon is in Antarctica at night when the solar cycle is near its maximum. The phenomenon is also visible in New Zealand, southern Australia and southern Chile and Argentina.

Aurora australis can reach up to 300 kilometers where green lights are usually seen but there are times when it can reach up to 500 kilometers and as low as 80 kilometers.

For its colors, it is similar to what make a flame orange-yellow when salt is added to it; the green and red came from atomic oxygen; nitrogen ions and molecules make some pinkish-reds and blue-violet; etc.
