Our hospital’s ophthalmologist Li Wenliang was unfortunately infected with coronavirus during his work in the fight against the coronavirus epidemic

He died at 2:58 a.m. on Feb 7 after attempts to resuscitate were unsuccessful.

The Wuhan coronavirus had already taken more than 618 lives. Along with this, 15,804 patients were still hospitalized with over 841 patients are under critical condition in Hubei province.

Meanwhile, a cruise ship in Japan was still under quarantine after 20 passengers were found to be positive for the coronavirus. Those infected were moved to a hospital while the remaining passengers needed to be under quarantine at sea.

According to an article from CNN, several state media networks reported the death of Li. This was following the outburst of anger from social media. Afterward, the Wuhan Central Hospital released a statement that Li was alive but in critical condition.

They added that attempts were made to resuscitate the doctor. However, his battle against the virus was not one that he won.

In December, Li alerted his colleagues about a potential SARS-like virus outbreak. This gained the attention of the authorities. Afterward, he was summoned and forced to sign a reprimand letter where he was accused of “spreading rumors online” and “severely disrupting social order”.

Li was just one of several medics being censored by the police for trying to expose the truth in the early days of the virus outbreak. The doctor was hospitalized on January 12 and he tested positive for the virus on February 1.
