Mayon Volcano: Two Solar Panels For Mayon Monitoring Got Stolen, Phivolcs Reported

Monitoring equipment for Mayon Volcano got stolen as per Phivolcs.

MAYON VOLCANO – PHIVOLCS, in a press release, reported that two solar panels got stolen and those were intended for Mayon volcano monitoring.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) released a press statement reporting that two of their solar panels, at 150 watts each, got stolen from DOST-PHIVOLCS Mayon Resthouse station. This is where monitoring equipment for earthquake monitoring, Global Positioning System (GPS), and tiltmeter are being stored and sheltered.

Accordingly, this has been discovered by a personnel from Mayon Volcano Observatory when they have administered a routine inspection and preventive maintenance last February 5. The lost solar panels provides energy thus, the loss will greatly affect the monitoring of the volcano.

Moreover, Republic Act 10344 (Risk Reduction and Preparedness Equipment Protection Act Of 2012) penalizes the “unauthorized taking, stealing, keeping, or tampering of government risk reduction and preparedness equipment, accessories, and similar facilities.”

Meanwhile, in a previous article, Phivolcs’ 4 p.m. bulletin yesterday, February 5, recorded a crater glow from Mayon which shows possibility that magma might be quietly rising. Also, they have detected light swelling or inflation of the volcano.

Mayon remained in Alert Level 2 since March 2018 which means a ‘moderate level of unrest’. Phivolcs added, “It is therefore strongly recommended that entry into the six kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone or PDZ and a precautionary seven kilometer-radius Extended Danger Zone or EDZ in the south-southwest to east-northeast sector, stretching from Anoling, Camalig to Sta. Misericordia, Sto. Domingo, should be strictly prohibited.”
