Duterte Approves Review Mechanism For K to 12 Program
DUTERTE APPROVES K TO 12 REVIEW – President Rodrigo Duterte has approved a review mechanism for the K to 12 program.
This was following the results of the global reading comprehension assessment wherein Filipinos did poorly. With this, Duterte backed the Department of Education’s “Sulong EduKALIDAD” program.
According to an article from ABS-CBN, the program aimed to review and update the curriculum of the K-12 program. In addition, it plans to improve learning environments and upskill teachers.
Along with this, EduKALIDAD would also engage stakeholders for more support and collaboration. This would highly benefit the needs of the people in the educational fields.
Previously, the Philippines ranked last among 79 countries for reading comprehension. The assessment surveyed over 600,000 students around the age of 15.
Filipinos students got a score of 340 points, lower than the average 487. As per the article, the majority of the Filipinos aged 15 are under grade 9.
As per the article, Presidential spokesperson Salvador Penlo stated that Secretary Leonor Briones explained her department was already under “unfavorable” results of the survey.
She emphasized that the capital’s participation in the survey was aimed towards the establishment of a baseline to measure the development of the educational system in the country.
In this way, per Secretary Briones, they would be able to evaluate the results and implement corrective measures to address the deficiency of our education system
