PHILIPPINES LOWEST IN READING COMPREHENSION – A worldwide study revealed that the Philippines scored the lowest in reading comprehension.

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a worldwide study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. They examine student’s capabilities in reading, mathematics, and science.

In the study, there were 79 countries that participated. Among those 79, the Philippines scored the lowest in reading comprehension.

The study was conducted back in 2018. However, the results of the study were released to the public on Tuesday.

Based on an article from Philstar, Reading was the main subject that was assessed among 15-year-old students. The Philippines scored an average of 340 in reading.

The score was over 200 points below China who had 555. It was also a 100 points lower than the OECD average of 487.

Both boys and girls ranked lowest among PISA participating countries. The Philippines also got second-lowest in mathematics.

However, China led the rankings in mathematics and science with 489 and 483 points respectively. Only the Dominican Republic scored lower in these categories.

The country also scored the second-lowest in math and science along with Panama with 353 and 357 points respectively. Only the Dominican Republic had lower scores.

The Philippines has the biggest percentage of low performers in reading. This was among economically disadvantaged students.

The study on the country’s profile noted that the average class of 15-year olds in the Philippines are the largest. In addition, the ratio of students to teaching staff is the highest.
