Promotions Denied For Overweight Cops, Police Force Must Slim Down
OVERWEIGHT COPS DENIED PROMOTIONS – The Philippine National Police has 180,300 cops in their workforce. However, almost half of them are overweight.
That is why the PNP had decided that in order for a member of the force to go up in ranks, they must put in the effort to slim down.
According to an article from Inquirer, Police Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac, the PNP’s spokesperson, 36% of all policemen were overweight. In addition, 10% were obese.
Banac told reporters that the numbers weren’t particularly of concern. But, the PNP needed to push their officers to reach their ideal weight based on their Body Mass Index (BMI).
As per the article, he stated that there was no deadline set for their weightloss. However, Banac emphasized that officers should show improvement monthly.
Otherwise, this would affect their schooling and their promotions. With this, Banac stated that at the end of 2019, 54.4% or 98,093 personnel nationwide had achieved their ideal weight.
Following this, earlier this month, Director General Archie Gamboa, PNP chief, stated that he wanted to see policemen to shape up before climbing the ranks. He wanted to achieve their ideal weight to be a prerequisite to promotions.
He issued an order on Interior Secretary Eduardo Año’s directive to create a profound physical and mental image of the PNP. In addition, he highlighted the importance of being fit, particularly, chasing criminals.
We assure the families of PNP personnel that all physical exercises and weight loss of police officers will be strictly monitored by PNP Health Service personnel.

With this, Maj. Gen. Debold Sinas, portly Metro Manila police chief had volunteered to lead and be the model of the PNP’s slimming program of the NCR.
