This would lead to overweight officers being barred from going through training for career advancement. According to Police Lt. Gen. Archie Francisco Gamboa, this is not all about the image.

He said that this is to emphasize the individual responsibility of each officer to their personal health. Gamboa added that if officers don’t take care of their body, they might not reach retirement.

There are schooling required for certain positions, there are schooling required for certain promotions

This is not all about the image of the PNP, that police officers shouldn’t have big stomachs. But this is more on individual responsibility, the officer’s health

Following this, Gamboa himself stated that he neede to shed a few pounds to meet the ideal weight requirements. According to an article from CNN, police must maintain a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 to be part of the police force.

Back in 2019, then PNP chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde mandated the National Police Training Institute to require recruits to keep-up their BMI before graduating from basic training.

Based on Gamboa’s statements, those who do not meet the BMI requirements would be denied schooling (classes) required for career advancement. “Up until you comply with BMI requirements, that’s the only time that you can go on schooling“, said Gamboa.

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement of an individual’s weight with respect to his/her height. Those who have a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 are considered to have a healthy weight.
