Taal Volcano’s Ash Emissions Prove Magma Activity Underneath
TAAL ASH EMISSIONS – Despite its seeming unrest, Taal Volcano has yet again proven that magma activity underneath the surface is still in play.
According to Taal resident volcanologist Paolo Reniva, the recent ash emissions of the volcano were the “strongest in the past few days”. In addition, Phivolcs director Renato Solidum also gave an update.
He said that there’s not much force to indicate an eruption. However, the steaming had increased by a little.
In a statement he made on DZMM, he said that residents are still urged not to return to the volcano island due to phreatic or steam-driven eruptions.
The Phivolcs director explained that in the event that the steam gets blocked, there would be pressure created. Afterward, Solidum said that could cause an explosion.
In addition, fissures and cracks had also appeared in several towns in Batangas last week. This was an indication that magma was still active underground.
Meanwhile, Taal Volcano is still under alert level 4. This meant that a hazardous explosive eruption is still possible within hours to days.
The Philippine Seismic Network (PSN) had detected seven hundred thirty-eight (738) volcanic earthquakes since January 12, 2020.
Residents within the 14-km danger radius from Taal Main Crater and along the Pansipit River Valley where fissuring has been observed were advised to evacuate.
