Hazardous Eruption Still A Possibility Due To “Re-Charge” Of Rising Magma & Earthquakes

RISING MAGMA – Recently, several earthquakes were felt in areas near Taal Volcano. This was due to a “re-charge” of rising magma beneath the Taal Volcano.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Director Renato Solidum, if the magma were to rise to the surface, there could be a “strong eruption”.

Based on a report from ABS-CBN, on Sunday. there were 244 recorded earthquakes from 5:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. These quakes cast fears towards thousands of evacuees.

In addition, Taal Volcano spewed 4,300 tons of sulfur. That’s almost triple the amount from the 1,400 tons of sulfur produced the day before.

As per the article, Solidum told DZMM:

Mayroon tayong nakikitang re-charge o re-supply ng magma na galing sa ilalim papunta doon sa volcano island at nagdudulot din ng mga paglindol

Posibleng kung umabot ito sa ibabaw ay magdulot ng pagsabog na puwedeng malakas

Taal Volcano still remained under alert level 4. This meant the volcano still has a possibility of having a “hazardous explosive eruption” within hours to days.

In addition, an update from the PHIVOLCS bulletin recorded 23 volcanic earthquakes with magnitudes from 1.2 to 3.8 as of Sunday 5 AM to Monday 6 AM.

The activity in the main crater was described by “steady steam emission and infrequent weak explosions,”. Along with that, white to dirty white ash plumes, 500 to 1,000 meters tall were spewed to areas southwest of the main crater.

Authorities still urged residents to stay clear of the areas under the 14-km danger zone. In addition, the airspace around Taal still remained unsafe due to risks from airborne ash and ballistic fragments.
