Batangas Hit by Earthquake with 4.6 Magnitude

EARTHQUAKE – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 4.6 magnitude quake in Batangas, January 19, 2020.

Most of the time, quakes hit with no prior signs. Recently, several places in and out of the Philippines were shaken by quakes of different magnitudes.

One of the strong quakes recorded by Phivolcs is the 7.1 magnitude quake in Davao Oriental. There were expected aftershocks due to the said quake and a tsunami advisory was released.

Previously, in April 22, Phivolcs recorded a quake in a part of Zambales. It had a magnitude of 6.1. Strong shaking were felt leaving people fearing about the so-called “Big One“.

Recently, a quake has hit a part of Batangas. At 08:59 pm on January 19, 2020, Mabini was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6.


According to Phivolcs, the quake that hit a part of Batangas was located at 13.73°North, 120.91°East – 004 km South 50° West of Mabini. The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 007 kilometers.

Based on the bulletin released by Phivolcs, there are no expected damages caused by the quake and as well as aftershocks. The following intensities were felt:

  • Intensity V- Mabini and Bauan, Batangas
  • Intensity IV- Batangas City; Santo Tomas, Batangas
  • Intensity III- Malvar, Cuenca, Tanauan, San Pascual and Calatagan, Batangas; Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro and San Pablo, Laguna
  • Intensity II- Alfonso, Cavite; San Teodoro, Oriental Mindoro
