The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in their latest bulletin that alert level 4 will mean that “hazardous explosive eruption” might occur within hours or days.

According to GMA News, the agency added that Taal’s initial phreatic or steam-driven activity, which occurred on Sunday, has progressed into a magmatic eruption from 2:49 AM up to 4:28 AM, Monday.

“This magmatic eruption is characterized by weak lava fountaining accompanied by thunder and flashes of lightning,”

It was reported that lava fountains were observed in the volcano on early Monday morning. As of 5 AM, about 75 earthquakes hve been recorded.

The institute further elaborated that 32 of these tremors, ranging from Intenity 2 to 5, were felt in:

  • Tagaytay City
  • Cabuyao
  • Laguna
  • Talisay
  • Alitagtag
  • Lemery
  • Bauan, Batangas

“Such intense seismic activity probably signifies continuous magmatic intrusion beneath the Taal edifice, which may lead to further eruptive activity.”

The total evacuation of those at the island was repeated. For those within 14 kilometer radius from the Taal Main Crater, they were urged to evacuate due to high risks of pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami.

As for the residents in the north of the volcano, they were urged to take precautionary measures for the effects of heavy and prolonged ashfalls.

The airspace around the volcano must be avoided by aircraft due to airborne ash and ballistic fragments from the eruption. Airport authorities further cancelled flights due to the eruption.

As per the report, the volcano continues to spew ashes after 8 AM.

“Tuloy-tuloy po ‘yung emission… Karamihan po diyan sa mga ash emission ay may mga kasabay na paglindol na nararamdaman din dito po sa baba at sa taas ng Tagaytay,”

More than 7,000 have been evacuated due to the volcanic activity according to National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRMMC).

Furthermore, classes and government work were also cancelled on Monday.
