Transport Groups Again Requested P12 Minimum Fare for Jeepney
The transport groups again requested that the minimum fare be increased to three pesos in the passenger jeepney, which would be P12.
On Friday, January 10, 2020, transport groups filed a petition to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) office to increase the minimum fare. Operators have requested a P3 surcharge on the minimum jeep fare, in preparation for possible high-cost petrol amid conflict in the Middle East.
According to the report of ABS-CBN, Zeny Maranan, president of the Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines, stated that petrol prices could rise to possible 50 in the market. Currently, diesel prices range between ₱ 40 to ₱ 45 per liter.
Meanwhile, Energy Secretary Bodie Pulido explained that petrol prices could rise slightly if the global market affected by the discord between Iran and the US.
Pulido added that the Philippines is not importing petrol from Iran but if there will any problem, it is the route of vessels and ships. The supply of companies is also sufficient for the first quarter of 2020.
“The market has reflected a bit of increase because of speculation, ‘yan po ay analysis ng international think tanks at sa aming analysis Pulido explained on a report of ABS-CBN.
This is not the first time that various transport groups have asked the LTFRB to increase the minimum fare. In 2018 and 2019 there are also reports of extra fares.
