Iran was struck by two earthquakes near a nuclear power plant after a chaotic day that saw the country launch missiles at two U.S. military bases in Iraq before a passenger plane crashed and killed dozens in an unrelated incident.

Two earthquakes struck near a nuclear power plant in southwestern Iran on Wednesday morning, measuring magnitudes 4.9 and 4.5, CNN reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the stronger quake hit at about 2:20 a.m., six miles southeast of the city of Borazjan. The second quake hit almost exactly one hour later about 10 miles southeast of the city.

The Wednesday morning quakes came just hours after the country launched a ballistic missile assault against two U.S. military bases in Iraq.  The attack appears to be in retaliation for the airstrike executed by the United States that killed top Iranian General, Qasem Soleimani.

Shortly after the strikes began, a Ukrainian Boeing 737 jet carrying 176 people crashed in Iran, killing everyone on board. It was reported that the plane likely crashed due to mechanical difficulties.

It has been reported the victims included 82 from Iran, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, three Germans, and three Britons. Most passengers were in transit.
