The attack appears to be in retaliation for the airstrike executed by the United States that killed top Iranian General, Qasem Soleimani. However, there were no initial reports of U.S. casualties.

Meanwhile, reports stated that an initial assessment of the impact is underway. There were casualties among the Iraqis at Ain al-Asad airbase after the attack.

According to an article from CNN, the number of casualties whether the individuals were killed or wounded was not clear. In lieu of this, White House aides are making plans for a possible address to the nation by President Trump.

The US stated that the airstrike was an attempt to de-escalate tensions with Iran. However, Tehran vowed vengeance for the killing of Soleimani, who said the killing was an “act of war” and “state terrorism”.

To the Great Satan … we warn that if you repeat your wickedness or take any additional movements or make additional aggression, we will respond with more painful and crushing responses,

Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps

The statement was made by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. They are an elite wing of the Iranian Military known as the IRGC.

As per the article, the attacks were “hard revenge” for the death of Soleimani. They stated that any country housing US troops could be subjected to “hostile and aggressive acts”.

In addition to this, they called on American Citizens to demand the US Government to remove US troops from the region.

In response to the attack, Pentagon spokesperson Jonathan Hoffman made this statement.

In recent days and in response to Iranian threats and actions, the Department of Defense has taken all appropriate measures to safeguard our personnel and partners

These bases have been on high alert due to indications that the Iranian regime planned to attack our forces and interests in the region

As we evaluate the situation and our response, we will take all necessary measures to protect and defend U.S. personnel, partners, and allies in the region.
